John and Slyvia Peters
John and Slyvia Peters, for over three decades, have led what is known today as the Clemson Area FCA Adult Chapter to raise $622,245.00, which has then been dispersed among the local FCA ministries surrounding Clemson, South Carolina. Among those receiving these gifts are Clemson University FCA Mission Trip, Clemson University Life Coach Ministry and Foothills Area FCA ministries. If not for John and Sylvia Peters and their leadership, who knows if or where Clemson FCA or Foothills FCA would be today. Though they do not have the athletic background and history that others in the Hall of Champions may have, they do without question embody the mission, vision and values of FCA through their 37 years of involvement.
They felt the call to help in a time of need to raise money for a mission trip in the fall of 1992 for Clemson University FCA. That year they formed the Clemson Area FCA Adult Chapter and raised $1,800.00. Each year after that they led a group to host what was known as Rally at the Rim or Rally in the Valley where a few thousand students would attend and be exposed to the Gospel message. The last rally hosted before the pandemic raised over $30,000.00 which all went to local FCA ministries. For 37 years they along with a team of volunteers have raised more than $600,000.00 for the ministry of FCA and thousands of lives have been impacted as a result.
Their journey with FCA began under the influence of 2001 FCA Hall of Champions inductee Coach Freddy Mitchell during his time at Tabb High School where the Peters’ kids attended and played sports. It was in the mid to late 80s when Coach Mitchell invited the Peters to get involved and support FCA.
